Part 5 Reading (10 Marks)
Read the text and answer the questions below.
When planning your future career, it’s a good idea to think about how life may change in the future. A lot of jobs that are very common now may become much more unusual or may disappear in 10 or 20 years’ time. On the other hand, other jobs will probably become more important as our lifestyle changes.
The internet has already had a big effect on jobs and this will almost certainly continue. Only about 20 years ago, most people used to book flights and holidays through a travel agent. Often they would go to the travel agent’s and tell them exactly what they wanted. These days travel agents still exist but most people book flights online, and it’s so easy to find out about flights and prices that we can do it ourselves without asking for expert advice. Another big change over the last two decades has been the use of email, and because of this people send fewer letters than before. Although there are still postmen in most places, there are not as many as there were before and they don’t have so much to do. Because of this, post offices have also closed in many places. Nowadays people also download music and films from the internet, so shops that used to sell music or videos have almost disappeared.
These changes will certainly continue in the future. For example, in many countries people have started to do their shopping online. If this continues, there won’t be so many shops in the future and perhaps we won’t need shop assistants.
Two jobs will probably become more important in the future: computer programmers and carers or nurses for older people. Being a computer programmer is already a very good career because all jobs need computers and computer programs, and this is certain to increase in the future. And with developments in medicine people are beginning to live longer. So we’ll probably need more and more carers to look after us in our old age.
