How my life changed
Peter Wagner from Germany writes about changes in his life
“I grew up in a small town near Frankfurt. I wasn’t very good at school but I did quite a lot of sport and I was good at football. I left school when I was 15 and got a job in a fast food restaurant. I was in the restaurant all day and I always had lunch in the restaurant – usually a burger or fried chicken. In the evenings I usually watched TV or met friends in a café, so I had a lot sweet drinks every day and drank too much coffee. I stopped playing sport and most of my friends smoked so I also started smoking.

Then, when I was 19, the restaurant closed I lost my job. This was a very important moment for me because I realised I was nearly 20 and I wasn’t happy about my life. I decided to change everything. I had an uncle and aunt in Hamburg, so I went to live there and they helped me to find a job in a sports shop. I gave up smoking and I started studying in the evenings. I also decided I wanted to get fitter so I bought a bicycle and I cycled to work instead of taking the bus work. When I was at school I was quite good at football so I decided to start playing again. I joined a football club and I played at weekends. At first it was quite difficult because I wasn’t very fit, but I soon started enjoying it and it was a great way to make friends.

So now I’m definitely healthier and I feel a lot happier too. I’ve started eating healthier food, too. My aunt is a vegetarian and she’s also a very good cook, so when I’m at home I eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. But I don’t I want to become a vegetarian – I enjoy fried chicken too much!”
